Yemen Houthis make military incursions into South of Saudi Arabia The Yemeni Houthis have made further military incursions into Saudi territory into the Jazan region, in the South of the country, in a further escalation of offensive action.A growing number of members of the royal household support a move to oust King Salman and replace him with his younger brother.
Support from the clerics would be vital for any change of monarch, since in the Saudi system only they have the power to confer religious and therefore political legitimacy on the leadership.
The revelation suggests there is increasing pressure within the normally secretive Saudi royal family to bring to a head the internal power struggle that has erupted since King Salman inherited the throne at the beginning of this year. The prince, who cannot be named for security reasons, is the author of two recently published letters calling for the royal family to replace the current Saudi leadership.
The prince says something similar is going to happen again soon. Earlier this week the International Monetary Fund warned that Saudi Arabia may run out of financial assets within five years unless the government sharply curbs its spending, because of a combination of low oil prices and the economic impact of regional wars. He is said to have assumed too much power and wealth since being elevated to this position. He was deputy interior minister for 37 years and spent four years responsible for the religious sites in Mecca before being appointed Interior Minister in He left the post five months later, officially at his own request, and was replaced by Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, now the Crown Prince.
The dissident prince claims Prince Ahmed left after a disagreement about the treatment of political detainees. If Prince Ahmed has the authority he will allow such people out. He is not in trouble with gambling, women, drink or drugs. He is religious but open-minded, he knows English and follows the world news.
The prince expects the same will happen this time. You can find our Community Guidelines in full here. How did Kabir become the first Saudi royal to be executed for more than four decades? Kabir pleaded guilty to the shooting and killing of fellow Saudi citizen Adel bin Suleiman bin Abdulkareem Al-Muhaimeed during a mass brawl, according to Saudi state media.
A court found him guilty three years ago for the incident in the al-Thumama region, on the outskirts of Riyadh. Because the victim's family rejected offers of money in return for clemency, he was sentenced to the death penalty. The country's General Court sentenced him to death, a ruling supported by the Supreme Court, before a royal decree ordered the sentence be carried out. Saudi state news did not say how authorities carried out the execution but capital punishment is regularly carried out in public in the kingdom.
In a statement, the Interior Ministry said that the death penalty showed that it cared about "security, justice and safety for all," online site Arab News reported. The country follows a strict conservative brand of Wahhabi Islam, in which sharia law is implemented for criminal acts.
Neither the Saudi state news agency nor the Interior Ministry did not release personal details about Kabir, a typical trend in the conservative Islamic country. Alleged images of Kabir were circulating on Twitter but Newsweek could not verify their authenticity. Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud, a member of the royal family, speaking to the New York Times by telephone, said that Kabir was a member of one of the most important branches of the royal family.
However, he was not in the line of descendents of King Abdulaziz, the leader who founded the country in Every Saudi king has been a son of the kingdom's founding father and present King Salman belongs to this lineage. His family ties had no impact on the court's decision, al-Saud added.
One commentator on Saudi Arabia, who did not wish to be quoted speaking about the prince's execution, told Newsweek that while Kabir was not in line with Abdulaziz, he was not "from the periphery" and was not "unimportant. Kabir's execution sparked much conversation on Saudi social media, with commentators from different sections of the country's society taking to Twitter, mostly in support of the Saudi authorities decision to treat him like any other Saudi citizen.
The hashtag "Decisive Salman orders retribution for the prince" began to pick up traction on Twitter in support of the country's monarch. But Mohammed Khalid Alyahya, non-resident fellow at the Atlantic Council, says Kabir's execution is "nothing really significant in Saudi" because princes are held to the same legal standards as others. There is no way around it. May Romanos, Saudi Arabia Researcher at Amnesty International released a statement on the execution to Newsweek: "The death penalty is a cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment and should not be applied in any circumstances.
Whether the accused is a prince, an ordinary Saudi Arabian citizen or a migrant worker makes no difference whatsoever—no one should be sentenced to death or executed. Explaining the big time difference between the royal executions, Alyahya says there have not "been many murder cases involving members of the royal family in the past several decades to my knowledge. Saudi's ageing royal elite is one at odds with a youthful society, where more than half of the country's population is now aged under The House of Saud holds great wealth and its thousands of members enjoy a life of luxury in comparison with those who fall outside its lineage.
The decision appears to be a demonstration that there is no one exempt from the strict laws that regular citizens are held to on a daily basis. The Interior Ministry conveyed this in their statement, saying that the "legitimate punishment would be the fate of whoever tries to assault innocent people and shed their blood.
Weekly magazine, delivered Daily Newsletter Website access. The first roundup took place in Novemberwhen dozens of princes, including high-profile members of the royal family such as the late King Abdallah's son Mit'ab, and well-known investor al-Walid bin Talal, were taken to the Ritz Carlton hotel and held there in relative comfort though there were some claims of torture as well. Being framed as a clampdown on corruption, the sweep was not at all unpopular domestically, but the message had been sent: the crown prince, Muhammad bin Salman MbS was not to be underestimated.
Or defied, since a less charitable assessment would view the purge as a consolidation of power. This time around, the stakes were even higher, as those detained include Ahmad, the king's own full brother, until now assumed to be beyond the reach of the ambitious heir to the throne.
Who is Saudi Arabia’s new foreign minister Faisal Al Saud?
Ahmad had returned from a brief self-imposed exile in London on assurances guaranteed by the CIA and MI6 that he would not face repercussions at home following his perceived criticism of the country's leadership under MbS, who acts as the de facto king in place of his aging father.
Ahmad seemed the last and best hope of those opposed to the crown prince's power grab, both because he was a plausible successor to Salman by right, he can claim to be next in lineand because he had some sway with the king himself. Perhaps a word or two in Salman's ear could at least reign in the impulsive son, and allow room for other princes to participate, rather than being forced to the sidelines while the allies and friends of MbS were promoted despite any lack of qualification.
But the wish was ephemeral, as MbS continued his unstoppable climb, and opposition failed to coalesce around Ahmad as critics of the family had hoped.
It was nonetheless a shock to see Ahmad detained. It is also a gamble on the part of MbS, who is counting on the unequivocal support of U. President Trump, after making a mockery of the assurances given by intelligence agencies that he would protect Ahmad.
The second senior prince to be detained was Muhammad bin Nayif MbNthe former Interior Minister, who also served as crown prince from April until his removal in June He has been confined to a villa since then, and despite a seeming acquiesence to his usurper with subsequent public appearances alongside MbSthere was a concerted campaign to destroy his reputation, accusing him of being a drug addict whose whole existence was a failure.
The social media effort has now been resuscitated, and he is accused of being a drug taker and traitor. Indeed, if there had been a coup attempt, it is likely it would have originated somewhere in this nexus.
Opposition to the extent there was any in tangible terms was gathering around the person of Ahmad, and MbN was the only other senior royal with the connections and patronage network, if only residual, to have made any sort of a challenge viable in practice. But without the support of key ministries, such as Interior and the National Guard, it is very hard to see any actual threat being manifested.
The fact that high-ranking army officers and key staffers at Interior had been caught up in the sweep lent credibility to the idea that a coup against MbS had been staved off, but in reality the crown prince's iron grip on the apparatus of state is too secure by this point. More likely was the rumor that Salman had died, or was about to at any moment, forcing the crown prince's hand. His accession must be formalized on the king's passing, and a few key royals like Ahmad could stand in his way.
It is no secret that his brash ways and failure to involve the rest of the family, as per tradition, have alienated many of the royals, and Ahmad could easily have rallied those around him, undoubtedly provoking a crisis but one whose outcome was uncertain.
However, state television promptly aired coverage of the king meeting with foreign diplomats to dispel those rumors. Toggle navigation Datarabia.

Reports that another round of arrests had ensnared two senior princes, including the king's brother, sparked speculation that a major upheaval was underway.
Was Salman really on his deathbed, and the crown prince springing into action? Was this a response to an impending coup, and a crackdown on the ringleaders? Or was this all part of a longer-term plan by the crown prince to ensure his place in succession?
